WAAS to List Global Agricultural Carbon Certification Platform as Key Priority for Next Five Years
September 19, 2026
To support global food security, sustainable agricultural development and the carbon neutrality process, the World Academy of Agricultural Sciences (WAAS) plans to list the construction of the Global Agricultural Carbon Reduction and Carbon Removal Certification Platform as a key priority for the next five years. The platform will be built with reference to the internationally mature carbon removal certification system Puro.earth, creating an independent, authoritative and traceable agricultural carbon credit public platform, filling the global gap in exclusive carbon certification systems for agriculture.
The platform will be named the WAAS Agricultural Carbon Certification Platform, issuing WAAS Agricultural Carbon Credits, where 1 unit corresponds to 1 tonne of verified agricultural emission reduction or carbon removal. The platform adheres to the principles of being real and measurable, long-term sequestration, and avoidance of double counting. The certification scope covers farmland soil carbon sequestration, rice paddy greenhouse gas emission reduction, agroforestry carbon sequestration, agricultural waste biochar, sustainable farming emission reduction, and climate-smart smallholder agriculture projects in developing countries.
The platform will follow a closed-loop process of methodology development, third-party independent verification, carbon credit issuance, blockchain registration and traceability, and transaction cancellation. Standards will be benchmarked against international mainstream systems such as Verra, Gold Standard and Puro.earth. Certification outcomes can be connected to the EU CBAM, national carbon neutrality compliance, corporate ESG disclosure and international carbon markets.
As a non-profit international academic institution, the WAAS platform upholds academic neutrality and inclusive orientation, distinguishing itself from commercial carbon certification platforms and better suited to the needs of long-cycle agricultural projects and agricultural entities in developing countries. Once built, it will provide authoritative carbon certification for transnational agricultural projects and agricultural operators, support green financing and international cooperation, promote the establishment of unified global agricultural carbon standards, and enhance international discourse power in agricultural climate governance.
Next, WAAS will systematically carry out methodology research and development, international cooperation and pilot implementation, serving global agricultural green transformation with professional agricultural carbon certification public products.
